Same palette continued....

Untitled Landscape.  Watercolor.
About 8 x 10 inches.

I've been painting in the palette since July and finished this piece last week.  It's got quin red, phthalo blue rs, undersea green, and quin gold and I can push it in a lot of different directions.  I hope you like it too.

I've also been painting on 140 lb paper rather than 300 lb.  Mainly because that's what I have.  Soon, I'm going to have to buy more paper.

Finally, worth noting, I tend to latch onto a brush.  I've been using a mop brush rather than a flat or round.  It's messy but fun.

Winter Field

Winter Field.  Watercolor & Crayon
About 6.75 x 9 inches.
Speed post!  I have someplace to be in 15 minutes.

Started as a tree landscape, went to a pure abstract, and then came back to abstract landscape.

Best part?  It's signed, matted, photographed, and I'm about to list it on Etsy.  That's usually my energy barrier.  It's hard to sell art if you don't have any art online to sell.  Instead, there's a stockpile in my basement

Phthalo blue (gs), quin gold, phthalo green, and quin red, overlaid with crayon on the top half.

Welcome Back Cobalt

Welcome Back Cobalt.  Watercolor and Crayon.
Approximately 4 inches square.
I haven't used cobalt in a long time, and I'd forgotten how much I like the way it granulates in washes (see the sky), or can be used as an almost opaque color (see the foreground),  Nice.

Indian yellow, prussian blue, cobalt blue, and quin violet.  Plus some crayon.  On a scrap of paper, which is probably 300 lb Kilimanjaro.

You can see an earlier version HERE.

Darkness Falls

Darkness Falls.  Watercolor.
Approximately 12 x 16 inches.
I think I mentioned that I got some new colors in my last art supply order.  One of those is a new blue that's used heavily in the sky here:  Indanthrone Blue by Daniel Smith.  It is an intense, almost purple blue.  I like it.  Other colors are quin burnt orange (in the building's roof), nickel azo yellow (mainly in the foreground), and quin....I'd have to get up to double check this.  It's either quin red or quin pink.  Paper is Kilamanjaro 300 lb cold press from a block.

I like this painting.  I think the composition appeals to me.  I realize that I say that as the painter, but I don't always have a plan when I start these made up landscapes, and this one worked out to be fairly successful.

Whoops, I came back to add that it's for sale on daily paintworks--if you're interested, you can scope here:  http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/608584

Sorrow. A small watercolor landscape.

Sorrow.  Watercolor.
About 6 x 4.5 inches.
This is the 4th of five paintings I've done with this palette.  It's the same as my most recent irises, and one that I've got on facebook here.  I like this painting a lot for the intensity of the colors.  I'm not feeling chatty today, so we'll leave it at that.

Phthalo blue rs, hansa yellow medium, and carbazole violet on Kilamanjaro 300 lb cold press.

Day 20--30 Paintings in 30 Days. Switch Grass in Winter.

Switch Grass In Winter.  Watercolor.
Approximately 11 x 8 inches.
On Monday, Ohio decided to turn off the heat, and this morning it decided to start spitting snow.  Not a fan.  It is oppressively gray.  If feels like the sky is pushing down....mood, shoulders, spirit.  Blech. Don't believe me?  You can see for yourself in the picture I was riffing from below.

Palette is Indigo, Quinacridone Gold, and Quinacridone Burnt Orange (there may be a wee touch of Prussian Blue mixed in, but it is wee).  On Kilamanjaro 300 lb cold press watercolor paper.

Note:  Day 20 in Thirty Paintings in 30 Days, and I've only not painted 2 days.  I feel like a rock star!

Day 1--30 paintings in 30 days. Abstract Tree Line

Abstract Tree Line.  Watercolor.
Approximately 8.5 x 12 inches.
I think I mentioned that I was planning on participating in 30 paintings in 30 days, which is organized by Leslie Saeta.  You can find more information here.

I'll try not to inundate you--there may be a lot of photos without too much text.

Again, this photo is not fantastic.  (I'm on a roll!)  There's yellow cast in the whites since I was working after dark.  I'll go back and correct it tomorrow.

Edited--took a better pic this morning (another sunny day--yay!)  see below.....

Let Me In

Let Me In.  Watercolor.
Approximately 6 x 9 inches.
I must be feeling extra messy.  Might be the stress of December.

Cobalt Blue and Quinacridone Burnt Orange on Kilamanjaro 300 lb cold press paper.

I must also be feeling brief!

Wyoming's Holiday One Stop Shop

Limited Palette Barn Study.  Watercolor.
5 x 7 inches.
Calling this a study is a little strong--technically, it's a blank note card on Strathmore Watercolor Card Paper (it's 140 lb cold press paper designed to fold), that results in a card that is 5 x 7 inches with an envelope....

Why would I paint this, do you ask?

Because I need some small things to sell...!

I'll be at our neighborhood Holiday One Stop Shop this Saturday (12/5) from 10 am to 3 pm in the Wyoming Civic Center (1 Worthington Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45215).  At events like these (and I don't do many) I like to bring a bunch of these greeting cards.  (I also sometimes put them up on Etsy.  If you're super interested, you can check some examples HERE.)

eta- to correct the street, doh!  We have a bunch of parallel streets that all start with a 'w.'  Almost a decade here, and I still can't keep them straight.

I sell them for a nominal price--usually, $5 each.  And here's the trick: to make it worth my while to sell them at that price, I need to be able to paint them very quickly.  That kind of fast painting, though, the kind that looks elegant and loose and planned, is frequently what I'm shooting for in my regular paintings.  The cards then, work out to be useful for getting better at painting, since to be able to do that, and do it well......well, I still have a lot of work ahead of me. Still, every once in a while, I get something I really like.

Some other things of note--I need to get a stamp for the back of my cards.  Some day.  It's on my list.

I also need to stop taking photos with my phone after dark.  This picture has a horrible yellow cast that I can't seem to completely shake.

Hope to see you out on Saturday!

Amy

So, This Is Grapefruit

So, This Is Grapefruit.  Watercolor.
5 x 8.5 inches.
Last week at the fruit market (Country Fresh--if you live in Cincinnati and haven't visited, you should go!)  I found the most gorgeous Texas Grapefruit parked next to a deep purple red apple.  Aha.  I thought.  This would make a most excellent still life, so I bought some.

Well.  I also decided that I should try and clean the paint out of the mixing portion of my palette.....and that was my downfall.  Goodbye grapefruit, and hello landscape.  Grumble, grumble, grumble.  Worse, someone ate the grapefruit and the apple.

Phthalo green, phthalo blue gs, permanent orange deep, hansa yellow medium and a jumble of junk from my palette.....on Kilamanjaro 300 lb cold press paper,
